The mandocello is tuned one octave below the tenor mandola, and takes the musical part of a bass instrument. It can also be tuned one tone higher, to D A E B; some musicians prefer this tuning if they are used to playing an instrument tuned G DAE

The mandocello has the same scale length as the bouzouki. If it is strung with bouzouki strings and tuned G D A E, it gives you a bouzouki with a much bigger body and a much bigger, fuller sound.
