Many other tunings are possible by using the individual capos on the A F & d courses. The individual capos are screwed into sockets in the fingerboard. This way you can alter the note of the A F & D strings without re-tuning. The Nordic Mandola was developed in the 1980’s by Swedish Musician Ale Moller and instrument makers Chriser Adin and Helge Ekvall.
For a full and very comprehensive description of the Nordic Mandola do a web search on “The Nordic Mandols : it’s not a banjo”
The strings on this instrument are unusual, it uses phosphor bronze and classical guitar strings. The top 3 courses are phosphor bronze strings. The 2 extended bass courses are tuned in octaves. The higher pitched string in each course is a phos- phor bronze string, the lower is a classical guitar string. I strongly recommend that you use Hanna- bch classical guitar strings. Other manufactures make strings for the 10 string classical guitar, but only Hannabach make the Sup- per High Tension strings.
