The strings are tuned to GDAE, as with the standard mandolin, but an octave lower. Some musicians tune to G D A D or A D A D.
The octave mandola, sometimes called the octave mandolin, is very suitable as a melody instrument, having the same tun- ing as the mandolin, but one octave lower. Chord shapes are the same as for the mandolin, but are easier to play because of the wider fingerboard and the greater scale length.
My instruments were used in the backing bands for the shows “Riverdance” and “Lord of the Dance”
